The country service was established after Jim Harmon became interested in buses back in the 70’s when he was working as a driver for another bus company.

It was in 1976 when Jim bought out the company of nine buses with a partner, and in 1980 he and wife Kay took over the partnership.

In 1981 the couple’s son Paul joined the business after completing an apprenticeship as a mechanic where he won the first rural area award as Apprentice of the Year.

Paul was eager to drive buses and got his licence at the age of 19, although it was restricted because the age of attainment was officially 20 in those days.

In 1984 Paul’s wife Anna joined the business.

Jim, although retired and has handed over the reign to Paul & Anna, is still actively involved in the business.

With four sons, Paul says it is likely that one of them will carry on the business as they all show a keen interest in their grandfather and fathers work.

Inverell Bus Service now operates a fleet of 17 vehicles in the townships of Inverell, Ashford and North Star. Services are provided to all schools in these regions, along with local sporting groups and other organisations.
