Inverell is situated on the western edge of the New England Tablelands,
nestled in a picturesque valley beside the Macintyre River. Inverell's proud
pioneering history is noticeable by the town centre with its beautiful restored
buildings, you can also wander through the Pioneer Viilage with its authentic
historic buildings to experience and
feel
the history of the area.
Known as the Sapphire City, the area is known to produce many fine gemstones and you can try your luck in the areas set aside for fossicking. Visit the Sapphire Centre, Gem Centre and see the local stones being processed. Mining is part of the rich history of the district and you can discover this at the historic Conrad & King Conrad Silver Mines.
The mighty Copeton & Pindari Dams are where you will find
many a fisherman pulling in a variety of different species of fish and no
doubt hear their stories. Great spots to spend a day or week beside the water,
skiing, sailing,
enjoying all water activities, then relaxing by the campfire and find out
how calming it can be.
During the summer months, large amounts of water is released from Copeton Dam for the cotton crops out west. With this release the Gwydir River becomes one of the best whitewater rafting locations in Australia.
The district boasts many attractions which allow the visitor to experience a diverse range of activities.
Magnificent Draught Horses are proudly paraded and their history
and memorabilia explained and on display at the Local Draught Horse Centre.
Arts, Crafts & Woodturning is on display in several different locations from some very creative and artistic attractions.
Try the local wines at our two vineyards, both red & white wines are bottled and tasting is available together with cellar sales.
The Transport Museum is a must see with over 200 vehicles on display, this makes the museum one of the biggest on the eastern seaboard.
The district is becoming a large producer of Olives and Olive products, so you can visit an Olive Grove and Olive Factory during your stay in the town.
